STORY
The game begins with Gaal meeting a mysterious man named Tatsumi. By fucking the sujimon to orgasm, he renders them powerless and lifts men from their curses. Together, Gaal and Tatsumi are going to defeat all the Sujimon!
The writer often gives text dumps of lore that interrupt the flow of the game. For example, killing higher ranked sujimon will free more men from their control. The explanation for this simple mechanic was stretched into ten minutes.
I felt like Tatsumi should have been the main character. In fact, he’s the only one who can walk around at night to unlock sex scenes. And even the DLSite page admits Tatsumi is the focus by saying she peeps on everyone having sex.
The plot of this game is very free flowing, there isn’t a demon army or something to defeat. Simply travel from region to region defeating Sujimon and unlocking sex scenes. Its not very compelling, but it was the first RPG from this developer.
GAMEPLAY
Sujimon Quest was created in RPG Maker VX Ace. There is no dialogue skip, text log, or button to hide text boxes. Even by 2016 standards, this was pretty lazy on the developer’s part.
The game is a standard RPG experience. Beat enemies to level up and earn money to buy new equipment for your party. The towns are pretty barren with nothing to do outside of dialogue.
Side quests are tracked in the item menu. Players can teleport between locations via merchant tents found across the map. Defeating a sujimon via sex will earn ten times the original experience points. There’s a basic lewdness level that rises when Gaal watches Tatsumi fuck other girls. It’s lowered by reciting prayers at the pond. There are no sex stats.
As the first release from this developer, it’s a good start. But without a memorable plot or gameplay, the experience was forgettable.
GRAPHICS
The art is drawn in the unique anime style of circle Black Train. There are around 20 base CG images. The DLSite page says there’s more images, but that’s only zoom-ins and variation images for character expressions.
The artworks are gorgeous. Black Train has always been a master of shading and lighting. From a glance you can tell which direction the light in a room is coming from. Whether it’s blushing or sweat marks, each girl is given unique visual indicators that reveal their state of mind. The biggest downside is that the main character only has one outfit.
The world map is gorgeous. As you move through the forest, teleportation points are located further and further south. You really feel like you’re making progress in your travels.
Symbol encounters are used for monsters, allowing you to avoid battles entirely if you want to. Item pickups are also available throughout the dungeon whenever you see unique herbs and items. The ability to pick flowers like this and see them regrow over time, made the environment come to life.
However, the use of stock RPG Maker assets held this game back from being truly memorable. A generic forest full of monsters is going to get repetitive no matter how many items you add to it.
VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)
Sujimon Quest has three unique voice actresses. All voice work is restricted to sex scenes. Although this adds life to the characters, the voice work is relatively minor. A lot of the time, he could have used generic moaning tracks and I would be unable to tell the difference.
The sound effects in this game are unique and enjoyable. You can tell the developer went through the stock assets for every action, and replaced them with something else to sound more appealing. I’m mostly speaking of menu navigation and other miscellaneous sounds. A reactive user interface accompanied by unique audio makes for a great first impression.
MUSIC
There are 79 tracks in total. Most tracks are stock assets, but they’re mixed in with uncommon licensed assets. I can’t know how many are unique compositions when they’re playing back to back with stock material.
Digitally synthesized chimes are often used, but other tracks make use of realistic instrumentals. One track was relaxing guitar and flute that had a medieval vibe to it. Another track was largely piano with a synthesized beat to accompany it. While some songs were basic, there were a variety of others that were truly enjoyable and memorable. I’ve actually saved some to my phone for later listening!
Of course, this is a game about fucking monster girls. Many of these tender or dramatic tracks felt like a bit of a mismatch compared to the rest of the game. Even though I enjoyed the music, it wasn’t fully fitting to the experience at all times.
HENTAI
There are 26 scenes in total, including five monster girl scenes. They’re basically humans with animal ears. The content is very vanilla, but not the good kind of vanilla where you have tons of emotional build-up before the sex. It felt like the developer wasn’t bold enough to explore.
Although Gaal is on the cover, she hardly gets any scenes. Most scenes show a new girl every time, which is lame. You’re not emotionally invested in these characters, so the sex is not that hot. Artworks tend to repeat with slightly adjusted dialogue. Why include a lewdness level when the scenarios never develop into something exciting?
The recollection room is in the diary at the player home. Most scenes are devoted to side characters like Eliza the bar wench, giving Tatsumi a blowjob for no real reason. Sex positions range from cowgirl to doggystyle. Dialogue is the standard “it’s so big I love it”.
CONCLUDING WORDS
Sujimon Quest was the first RPG release from circle Black Train. The title shines bright when it comes to visuals and audio, but the gameplay and story were average overall. Still, lovers of Black Train’s art style are sure to enjoy this one.
