STORY
This game has one true ending and 10 bad endings. The DLSite page plainly states that it is “Basically not possible to get the true ending on a first playthrough”. While it’s technically possible, the game is designed to require a walkthrough or multiple playthroughs.
One boss is completely invulnerable unless you use the same spell 5 times. The final boss can only be beaten if you’re a virgin, otherwise it’s an automatic loss. Your holy sword does zero damage against humans, so most players will lose an important story battle. There’s a three day countdown to beat a super powerful boss or you’ll get an immediate game over. The list goes on. The game design is infuriating and requires a walkthrough essentially. It is not a smooth and enjoyable experience.
This developer is pretty evil. The game narration directly tells you to go fight a thug named Samson, knowing you’ll be too under-leveled to beat him. Even if you put up a good fight, he has an instant-kill technique after enough turns pass. The developer literally told you to come here and fight him. Meaning, the good ending of the game requires ignoring what the devs tell you. That is fucked up.
There are six chapters before the final showdown. In spite of splitting the game into “chapters”, there really is no story to be found until the endgame. First you clear the grassy plains, then the rocky cave, then the dark gas zone. A rival knighthood challenges you, but you beat them. Then you face the evil wizard who created this world, Neville. Even using a walkthrough, it takes 3-4 hours before the story actually picks up.
The DLSite description says the Temple City of Reine is the last bastion against the monster onslaught, but characters in-game actually mention other human settlements like one run by the pope. Not that it matters, since you only get to explore this small city and a bunch of dungeons. Once you’ve explored Reine, there’s nothing to do besides grinding levels.
The saddest part of all is, the world actually had some potential. The monsters in this world infect men, turning them into monsters via open wounds. Naturally, this led to a semi-matriarchy, since women were the only knights capable of pushing back the monster threat. Under a matriarchy, there is unrest among the men in town, who are usually used as grunt labor to fortify the city walls. But rather than exploring this tension, most of the game is focused on dungeon crawling with no real plot whatsoever. The story only unfolds 10 hours in when you face the evil wizard, but then you beat him and the game is done! What a waste!
GAMEPLAY
Le Dernier Saint Chevalier was created in RPG Maker VX Ace. Press W to hide text boxes. Press A for the text log.
This is a grindy dungeon crawler with minor city-building features. You cannot own items or make money from killing enemies. Instead, you get some potions when you start missions and are only paid when you complete missions. Each mission consumes a full in-game day.
Money is used to upgrade city stats (like the wall and economy), technology stats (like new armor and spells), and knighthood stats. Of course, this is just a rebranding of the standard RPG formula. You upgrade “technology” instead of buying new armor. You “send knights on missions” instead of finding treasure chests yourself. Even the wall is simply “pay this much gold to see the next day”, like an expensive inn.
When you ignore the pointless stats, the game is very poorly paced. Level-ups are slow, and you never feel much stronger than before. Locking spells and armor behind “technology upgrades” intentionally slows down the pacing. You’ll have to wait 4 in-game days for a new spell or shield, and it’s torturous. And because you need to pay for the wall every day, you can’t just sleep it off. You have to repeat the same missions over and over again, waiting for a new upgrade, before you can progress in the story.
Health points are pointless, since enemies can just damage your clothing and immediately restrain your character! Suddenly you get forced into sex, which locks you out of the good ending. You could be level 99, but if the monsters attack your clothes, you have to load a save file.
This game is 10 hours long, and it’s all grind. The removal of shops and item management was a nice experiment, but the typical RPG formula cannot survive without them.
GRAPHICS
The artwork is drawn in the Japanese anime style. There are about 30 unique CGs, focused largely on Raina and her friends.
Although locations have fancy names, the world design is pretty basic. The Phillistine Plains are just a grassy zone while the Placenta of Fools is a big ore mine. This is disappointing considering the world map shown in-game has a lot more personality and style. It’s too bad these stock assets weren’t able to deliver on what that map promised.
The character designs for Raina and her friends are gorgeous, but the story doesn’t lend itself to such a large cast. Rather, everyone kind of blends together. These are immature girls who never help your mission. And since most sex scenes have them nude, their clothing is never shown off in a fullscreen CG.
It almost seems as if each scene was drawn by a different person. Some scenes show Raina with narrowed eyes and moderate breasts, while in others she has huge anime eyes and tits larger than her head. The changes from scene to scene are minor, but they add up to the confusion over time.
VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)
Le Dernier Saint Chevalier has no voice acting.
The sound effects are stock assets from the RPG maker library used primarily during combat. Since Raina is the only playable character, her trope as a magic-wielding swordsman limits the range of sound effects. There’s no archery, and unless you want to lose all your mana points, you won’t have much opportunity to hear things beyond sword swings during your grind.
MUSIC
There are 52 songs total on the soundtrack. The music is wonderfully used to capture the mood. For example, the dark piano with low notes before a boss battle creates an uneasy feeling as you inch forward. Or the slow-paced song that makes a scene feel empty, whenever you enter your room alone. It really drives home the feeling that your roommate has died, and you’re stuck here with only your thoughts. Of course my favorite track was violin mixed with digitally synthesized guitar creating an upbeat rhythm for exploring the world. Especially towards the end of the story, the music really carries this game. However, most tracks are under a minute long and many of them are stock assets.
HENTAI
There are about 30 unique CGs and scenes depending on how you count them. For example, the gangbang scene repeats with a color swap for Raina having purple skin.
All scenes are unlocked by getting the true ending of the game, which requires a virgin playthrough. This is impractical, since it’s expecting players to endure 10 hours of grind without sex. And if you seek out the scenes on a standard playthrough, the loss of virginity locks you into a bad ending by default.
This title has tentacles, orc sex, stomach bulge, impregnation, and more! Nearly all scenes involve an unhappy female. Like when Raina prostitutes herself to the nobleman. Even if she agreed to this, she still isn’t happy. Naturally the dialogue is full of standard lines, such as “I would never enjoy this”, while it’s very clear from the visuals that the girl is secretly enjoying the sex.
The lack of voice acting and animation further damages these scenes. They feel cruel and hard to watch, rather than erotic. Some players may love these dark scenarios, but I found the game to be excessive in its negativity.
CONCLUDING WORDS
Le Dernier Saint Chevalier is an interesting concept, but it has lots of negatives. The story needs a walkthrough for a happy ending, but few players are willing to endure 10 hours of tediousness to reach the climax. Although the girls are hot, and they have hot sex, losing your in-game virginity automatically locks you into a bad ending! While the idea was novel, this game is far from balanced and enjoyable.
