Sometimes I fear I’m stuck in a time loop, reviewing the same game over and over again in parallel time-lines of the multiverse, only with different graphics. How do we escape this twilight zone of hentai gaming? How do we stop millions of hentai-lovers from jizzing their meager savings from their minimum wage jobs into waifu thumping browser games? We may just need a violent revolution to seize the means of Japanese media production.

STORY

“This is the land of Makai, a place full of angels. You are born to this world with a remarkably weak body, but with amazing magical talent. In order to prove your worth in this world, you have conjured a powerful spell and summoned a girl called Norn. As you finished this summon, you were attacked by mysterious creatures and following your new companion’s advice, you summoned a hero by the name Richard I. With the amazing swordsmanship of Richard I you survived the attack and started your journey through the world of Makai.”

The story is told via dialog-heavy sequences where the girls chatter between themselves and the player character. I was not impressed with the content. It’s very clear that this story was just done for the sake of filler. It’s a very limited experience, with no animations or CGs enhancing the storytelling.

GRAPHICS

The game has some incredible visuals, if you’re into the fantasy anime aesthetic. The enemies have fantastical visual designs that make them completely unique from other fiction that’s out there. You’re facing some very strange-looking monsters much of the time. The female characters are all sexy young babes rocking a variety of breast sizes and very complex clothing that will quickly trigger your instinct to procreate.

The background artwork depicts lush forests, deserts, caves, ruins, and other fantastical locations drawn in exquisite detail. The atmosphere is wondrous, like you’re exploring a world of unknown myth and legend. Everything from the coloring to the linework is a feast for your eyes.

The weapons and battle gear the girls carry around look incredibly interesting. Even the most basic waifus carry epic staves, swords, shields, bows, and other trinkets that elevate the medieval fantasy aesthetic.

When a girl utters a line, you sometimes see their portrait pop up in the top-right corner of the screen. This is distracting and useless, especially since you’re going to have double speed toggled on anyway, which clogs the screen with various texts and effects. A cleaner view would be much appreciated.

GAMEPLAY

Oblivious X is a very basic battle harem game. The combat is a fully automated visually flashy sequence that requires no player input. With a couple taps on the screen, you can replay the same level over and over again to accumulate more swag. The grinding experience is simple fun to do on the side while you’re busy with other activities, which is the allure of these types of casual games. Just leave the game open in another browser.

The management of your team is easy and intuitive. There’s several tabs in the “team” menu for leveling up your girls, equipping them with equipment, refining your equipment, etc. The stats are easy to understand, displayed via acronyms such as HP (health points), ATK (attack damage), DEF (defense), DEX (dexterity, dodge). You can clearly see which numbers go up when you’re looking to equip items.

The game has four character classes: Rogues, warriors, mages, and archers. If you’re familiar with RPGs, you don’t need explaining. The class system is as simple as it gets, as you’re never even playing around with talent tree systems.

The game is all about resource management. You’re making lots of decisions with your gold, leveling items, your crystals, etc. Level-ups are gained by fusing elemental spirits with your waifus. Crystals are gained usually from completing quests, and used to draw gear from the item gacha, or new waifus in the premium gacha. Note, the premium currency in this game is not crystals, but Nutaku gold. It’s a little strange, but the crystals don’t get you draws in the premium gacha, which nets 6-star girls. There’s also a stamina system, but it barely limits your playtime during the first few chapters.

MUSIC

This game has some decent action-packed music for battles, while the menu music is a cheerful tune with a carefree flute leading a fantastical melody supported by a violin, and various other instruments. It’s a short loop, but long enough to not get too annoying while you complete your town actions. The battle music consists of a normal battle theme, and a boss theme. The battle theme is a fast-paced song featuring a rocking violin, and a Megaman-style electronic beat. The boss music is similar in style, but lacks the violin.

The gacha tab has a regal track, sounding both militaristic and majestic. The “home” tab and “store” tab also have unique songs both, relaxing in their own way.

VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)

This game has full Japanese voice acting. The voice actresses are fine, sultry bitches whose every line makes you want to shut them up with your dick. You got the full spectrum of womanhood starting from young, squeaky, immature girls, to the refined ladies with deep, motherly voices. The acting is anime quality and will keep your genitals oozing wet.

The sound effects seem to be ripped from some anime stock library. Most sounds in this game are battle noises. There’s a large variety of swipes and blasts that sound cartoony, but fit the overall aesthetic. The menus also have sounds as you press buttons, so you’re never playing a silent game.

HENTAI

The hentai content is very scarce, because almost every single scene requires you to max out the affection level of the girl you want to see naked. This costs tons of gifts, which were rare drops during my review period. The few scenes I was able to unlock had some seriously gorgeous artwork.

A hentai scene in this game consists of descriptive storytelling and dialog, and an image of the girl getting herself some loving tender dick in the pussy. It’s very standard content, nothing mind-blowing.

CONCLUDING WORDS

Oblivious X has a unique, beautiful aesthetic. Otherwise it’s a total copy of other games in its genre. The girls are particularly beautiful in their elaborate frilly dresses and tiny panties that barely cover their juicy lady bits. The gameplay is relaxing and feels good, a perfect fit for multi-tasking internet users. If you’ve never played another battle harem game before, this title is a great first step into the world of hentai gaming.
