STORY
Minami is the sexy housewife across the street. You are blackmailing her into having sex with you! The story is written from both perspectives. Sometimes you can see the thoughts of a scared housewife begging for mercy, other times you get the guy’s viewpoint.
The game can be disturbing. The first hour you stalk this lady, calling her house and breathing into the phone like a total creep. After the stalking is done, the game gets very predictable. You blackmail her into sex and she slowly starts to love it. Depending on your choices, you will get one of three endings. Prison? A break-up? Or will she leave her husband and marry you?
GAMEPLAY
Neighbor Watching is a visual novel with numerous features standard to the genre. Press M for pause menu. Press S to quicksave. Press L to quick-load. Press A to automatically progress dialogue. Press V for voice replay. Press CTRL to fast-forward dialogue.
There are no choices for the first hour. During the second hour, you’ll face six choices which will decide your ending. Will you stick your cock through her mail-slot? Will you force her to shove a boiled egg up her pussy? Make the right choices and hopefully she will agree to marry you!
Choices mostly affect which sex scene you’ll see. I would have loved something like the opportunity to pull out to avoid pregnancy. Instead, creampies are all mandatory after the first scene, making for a very linear experience.
GRAPHICS
The visuals are garbage in the first half of the game, contrasted with the second half, which has downright orgasmic visuals. During the stalking phase, almost all images are of Minami on the phone. However, when the blackmail is over and you begin having sex with her, the visuals get super varied and enjoyable.
There are no animations, and the character stills are static. Dialogue might indicate a character is folding clothing, but the visuals show her just standing around. A few variation images would have made this game a lot better!
The entire drama takes place in your apartment room and her house. This means you’ll see the same background images over and over again. It seems like the developer spent less time on general visuals and more time on the sex scenes.
VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)
Minami is the only voiced character.
This game is a decade old and it shows. Aoba Ringo voiced the character of Minami, and she sounds super generic. She performs the part of a shy housewife with a high-pitched voice, constantly screaming “yamete”. The words are clearly spoken and the lines are delivered well, but this actress has done over 70 games before. Perhaps it’s only natural that her performance was forgettable at this point.
The sound effects are good stuff. You hear a heartbeat during tense moments. When you call Minami at her house, you hear the phone ring. Some of these sounds are so realistic, they totally immersed me in the game.
MUSIC
There are three songs in total, unique to the developer but used in many of their games.
Iโm not sure if this was an intentional design decision, but any attempt to skip dialogue will reset the music track. If you skip even a tiny bit of dialogue, the song replays itself from the start.
There aren’t enough music tracks. For a two hour game, you’ll be hearing the same music loop countless times until you want to mute the entire thing. The tracks themselves have no emotion and rely on digitally synthesized beeps to create a rhythm. The problem is, a rhythm without a melody makes for a boring song! I felt no emotion, and the repetitious nature of the music was annoying.
HENTAI
Neighbor Watching features 10 porn scenes in total. Each scene has a base CG and a handful of variation images.
Scenes usually start zoomed in on genitals. The camera zooms out to show the full scene. My favorite was how the camera is after the sex. The camera zooms in on the creampies, so you can watch her married pussy dripping, full of your cum!
This game is advertised as NTR because you seduce a married woman. Her clueless cuckold husband knows nothing, while you impregnate his wife behind his back! The technical term for this is netori, more commonly known as “the cheating wife fetish”. But the main focus of the game is on blackmail and voyeurism. Using your telescope to spy on a married woman is the story.
Some scenes drag on forever! Without big changes in art or interesting dialogue, it’s easy to get bored. Minami saying “Quiet down or my husband might see”, is hot the first time. But during a ten minute scene, I want her to say something new and mix things up!
