STORY
You are a high-level mercenary working for the Yakuza. You hunt down cults and demons. Your life is perfect, until a mission goes horribly wrong. You damage property worth over 2 billion yen! Can your demon hunting career pay off this huge debt? Or will you be forced to become an adult film star instead?
In the beginning, Ren battles alone in this world of demons and cultists. After soloing for a while, two new characters join your party. As you train and grow stronger, you’ll be able to defeat even greater demons than before. This climaxes with a battle against a god!
The quality of the writing is impressive, which is what I expected from veteran developers. There’s a large variety of characters with unique personalities and their own motivations behind their actions. It’s easy to get immersed in this dark and edgy world.
GAMEPLAY
Evening Starter was created with RPG Maker. Movement is controlled with arrows keys. Press Z to interact with people and objects. Press CTRL to skip dialogue.
The gameplay is a twist on your classic RPG formula. It’s a first person dungeon crawler, heavily focused on treasure hunting. Ren must pay back at least a million yen a week, or she’ll be forced into prostitution by the Yakuza. Hunt demons, find treasures, and sell your loot to pay off that debt and get the virgin ending.
The game allows you to heavily customize your characters and their abilities. From outfits and weapons, to consumables and skill trees, player input decides the attributes of each party member.
Outside of dungeons, the city menu allows you to prepare for your next adventure. You can visit the bar for gossip, see the masseuse for health regeneration, you’ll need to learn the ways of the city if you want to pay that debt!
The equipment and weapon you choose influence the combat experience. Actions like reloading your pistol are important. And with many enemies immune to bullets, you’ll have to use a variety of tactics to overcome enemies.
The game will easily take over ten hours to complete, and offers four endings. If you can pay off your debt, you will unlock the good ending, but you can consciously work towards three other lewd (and tragic) outcomes to Ren’s story.
GRAPHICS
The art style is the Japanese anime style. Character faces are very simple, and might not be to everyone’s liking. Shadows and body proportions stay consistent between CGs.
Most of the game takes place in metropolitan Japan. You also visit dens of demons and monsters. Surprisingly, all of the environmental artwork fits together cohesively, creating a believable world with a consistent tone and style that make fantasy feel like reality.
Unlike past games from Barony Sengia, Evening Starter has no pixel sprites whatsoever. All gameplay is either first person dungeon crawling, or navigating menus at the home base. Even though this approach is streamlined and cuts a lot of clutter, the complete lack of sprites can get annoying at times. Like when dialogue tells you that people are moving to another room, without sufficient visual cues. It breaks immersion in a way that animated sprites would not.
VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)
Evening Starter has no voice acting.
The sound effects in this title vary widely from gunshots to vaginal penetration. Even the slashing of a sword in battle is timed perfectly. Various battle noises keep the ultra violence entertaining. Many audio assets are standard stock content from the RPG Maker library, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re skillfully used and fulfill their purpose.
MUSIC
The soundtrack has 57 songs in total, many of which are unique to this circle. The majority of songs are stock music from RPG Maker’s library. Almost all songs mix real and digital instruments to create breathtaking melodies that are pure pleasure to hear.
The soundtrack has a melancholic feeling of suspense and intrigue. Ren is stuck between a rock and a hard place with her debt. The music conveys her feelings perfectly. Two guitars play soft notes going through highs and lows. A violin joins in during every chorus to mix up the rhythm. And rather than drums, a quiet tambourine keeps the beat.
HENTAI
The game has 26 sex scenes, each with a unique CG and numerous variations.
Ren is an inexperienced virgin at the start of the game, and depending on your choices, she might stay that way! The dialogue in sex scenes changes dramatically depending on how experienced Ren has become.
Almost all scenes feature fat old men having sex with a petite beauty. Fetishes range from prostitution to orgies, but the main focus is starring in adult films. The sex itself is rather vanilla.
While Ren consents to having sex on video, the other girls in the game do not have a debt. Their sex scenes are non-consensual.
Sex positions are typical ranging from missionary to cowgirl, with no animations to spice things up. The key fetish in this game, is having your sex tapes posted online for random men to see. The game tells you the view count on those videos, so you can track how Ren is getting more popular among perverts over time.
The best scene in the game is when the priestess gets fucked for donations to her church. Some rich fat guy wanted a shot at that pussy, and has been donating thousands of dollars to the church, just to fuck the virgin out of her.
CONCLUDING WORDS
Evening Starter is a fantastic RPG in the hentai genre. The story is engaging, the gameplay is engaging, and there’s enough sex scenes to keep you jerking for a long while.
