Riza came to this mysterious island in search of treasure! Explore the caves, forests, and mountains and find new loot!
STORY
Rice Thief Riza has no story or dialogue. She’s not even a rice thief! She’s an adventurer! There are no NPCs or story moments. Just clear one dungeon after another until she finds a great treasure and retires from her adventuring life.
GAMEPLAY
Rice Thief Riza was created with the Unity game engine. The mouse is the only way to control your character. Keyboard commands are used for blocking attacks in battle. Outside of purchasing new equipment, the gameplay is entirely centered on combat.
All fighting in this game happens in real time. The DLSite page calls this “the active time battle system”.
On the bottom right of the screen you have a timer before your attack is ready. Simply click an enemy to attack them. The enemies also have timers that indicate when they’ll attack. Press the button that corresponds to their attack type. For example, hold W if they use swords. If you’re holding W when they attack, you will take no damage.
Over time, the gameplay gets more complex. Rather than attack all at once, your enemies will space out their attacks, so you have to block more frequently. Rather than using identical attack types, the enemies will likely vary their choices. You need to keep your eyes on them, while waiting for the perfect time to strike.
Here’s a classic scenario. You’ll have to calculate the timing yourself. You need to block a frontal attack in 2 seconds and a side attack in 4 seconds, then you’ll have an opening! Strike a killing blow!
You need to wait for attack animations to end, otherwise your button presses won’t register. It’s unclear if the game is unresponsive, or if there’s an invisible cooldown. There were countless times when I tried to guard and my character simply did not.
While the early game is based on reaction time and skill, the late game is based on learning enemy patterns. Some enemies launch super attacks without warning and instantly kill you. This felt like a bullshit way to extend the game by forcing players to repeat battles.
There are 8 levels in total. You can choose between three difficulty modes. There are no experience points or level-ups. Get good.
GRAPHICS
The artwork is drawn in the classic Japanese anime style. Riza is the only on-screen character, and has multiple unique outfits available: A sailor suit, a french maid, and so much more!
There are 10 base CGs and 8 variation images. Most scenes have only a single still image, which is pretty underwhelming. While the good ending show an an artwork of Riza surrounded by gold, the bad ending is a sex scene.
The lack of a fullscreen mode holds this game back from greatness. I get that the artworks were drawn at a smaller resolution, but why punish the player for that? This needs a patch to add fullscreen functionality ASAP!
While the world map is gorgeous, icons just seem to appear out of nowhere. It would have been better if the map was drawn with ruins on it, rather than adding an icon on top of the map. The icons don’t fit.
VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)
Rice Thief Riza has no voice acting.
Sound effects are very limited. Sex scenes don’t feature any, and battle sound effects remain the same throughout the entire game regardless of the weapon you use. The developer did the bare minimum of work in the audio department.
MUSIC
The game has two or three songs at most. The menu theme features flutes. During battles, you hear a sweet guitar tune. I don’t recall a third track. While these original music tracks were nice, they were basically elevator music. They didn’t add a whole lot to the experience.
HENTAI
Rice Thief Riza has 12 scenes in total across 10 base CGs. The scenes are not unlocked by completing the game, so you’ll have to find them on your own. The game can be completed without viewing any scenes.
There are no animations, and dialogue is one or two lines at the most. Sex positions range from missionary to doggystyle, with a wide variety of perspectives. Riza has a perfect ass but it never gets showed off! And while her tits are huge, they seem to get even bigger during certain scenes.
The focus on monster sex felt like a big waste. Riza is sleeping at the inn, so why doesn’t she fuck some of the other guys? She never gets corrupted, and it felt like each scene needed more setup to be enjoyed.
CONCLUDING WORDS
Rice Thief Riza is a fantastic battle strategy game with a real-time combat focus. The use of multiple attack patterns by a variety of opponents kept this game interesting all throughout. I really hope the developer uses this battle system in his future games.
