You are a Dread Lord asleep in your castle. They don’t tell you that in the scene itself, but you are actually Sleeping Beauty. You get woken up by a desperate wolf girl sucking your dick.

I like this one. What I like most about it is the lack of obnoxious exposition and irrelevant faction and circumstance shit that usually goes into these stories.
Writers of recent decades have lost the ability to show power without talking about it through rambling bullshit. “Oh, big faction, oh big nobility, oh magicians, super secret cabals, big important – big ooof ooof”. Shut the fuck up! Get a courtyard full of people to kneel in fear of a character. One still image, says everything you want to say. If you want to go deep into it, just do wealth and arms, disparity in the clothing, royal bodyguards, or whatever the fuck.
So, simplicity I like. What I don’t like is that nobody has the fucking balls or imagination these days to use actual demons. What we get here is a Cartoon Network level of a demon world. They wish like they slay, but they converse like teenagers, goofing around, talking silly. And you – oh big fucking Dread Lord, have a role like you were caught perusing the cookie jar your mom told you not to touch.
I can take it from both extremes. I can take a powerless loser and watch him stumble and fight his way up the dog-eat-dog world. I can take a frightening powered brute slaying his way through a merciless land, experiencing the limits of power, the drawbacks of brute force, and the unpredictability of cunning.
What I’m sick and tired of is Spy Kids level of bullshit. Which is neither adult entertainment nor kids’ entertainment, given the tiddies and vaginas flying in all directions. Luckily it’s not too bad around Overlewd.
Developers still don’t get why really gritty games like Dark Souls, Darkest Dungeon, Arkham and various horror games gather vast audiences. Most people are tired of the soft corporate bullshit Pixar-level universes. There are bad guys who beat people up, but feel bad and goofy for saying the wrong thing to their minions and generally behave like it’s a kindergarten.
Overlewd is a game very lightly in the vein of Darkest Dungeon, in terms of how the combat works.
From a player standpoint, it’s alright. From a developer standpoint, it’s a loss. Most developers don’t understand how fine the balance of basics in these games is and what makes a good one. They kind of see the framework and think it’s doable. But it’s not that easy. Make your animation turn half a second too long. Remember, you have to repeat it 15 times per battle, it gets real tedious real fast.
And you can immediately tell a developer is not experienced in this space when they don’t have the basic RPG refinements. For example: When your characters attack, they still play the HIT sound effect even if they miss an attack. Evasion is just a text effect, characters don’t get a slight animation or anything signifying the evade visually.
Minor or not, stacking these goodies is what makes a visually satisfying experience. For example, health bars in League of Legends transform into a glass plate and shatter with light and effects when you kill an enemy, which is on top of the character model playing a death loop of vomiting blood or scattering into pieces, if they are robots or some other construct.
It’s like air conditioning in a car. You don’t need it per se, to do what you need to do with the car, but it’s very nice when you have it. But you know, peak winter or summer, it’s quite the treasure.
The gameplay complexity is modest. You can build some stuff in your domain, but it’s mostly about unlocking the functions in the game, such as upgrading girls, abilities, etc. The system is more fleshed out than King of Kinks. And less so than a mainstream RPG.
I experienced almost no technical problems in the game, which was a nice surprise. Unfortunately, if anything happens to your browser session, you won’t pick up where you left off. Say you paid energy to start a fight. Browser dies for any reason. You are one monster away from finishing the battle. It is all lost. Which is unfortunate in a game with a classic stamina system.
Graphically I appreciate most styles, including this one. You are either on board or not. In terms of visual variety, you might be skeptical, because they are reusing models, but they are doing a very respectable job of skinning them differently, so it comes out good.
Voice acting is fairly good and continues for more than I expected. As this is a western game, you get the full benefit of English voice acting, even if it’s a bit subpar compared to those kinky bitches the Japanese throw at these erotic games.
In the rest of the sound department, it’s okay. It didn’t impress me, but more importantly, it didn’t annoy the fuck out of me, so good enough.
Hentai-wise it could be better, it could be worse. You get decently animated scenes with decent-level voice work in them. If you are into the style and don’t mind the Spy Kids vibe, it’s easy to get into.
The story is a bit strange with most early encounters being familiar. Your character is given amnesia. Thus all the girls you encounter behave like they previously knew you. Which is a pointless loss in terms of exploration. There is no benefit whatsoever from that so far.
Interface design is more consistent and more readable than most, thank God!
It’s a Unity engine-integrated game and it handles fantastic in terms of performance. Monetization is what you would expect. Gacha pulls, girl stacking, girl Upgrades, skill upgrades, energy, resources, and gear.
If you’ve read my stuff, you will notice I bash them differently for the same things. That’s because most games cheapen out of doing any mechanics than monetization even half-heartedly, and so long as you produce something that is genuinely trying to be an entertaining game, you can go and put your cash shop stuff in it, without me griping over it.
CONCLUDING WORDS
Overlewd is a decent attempt from a western developer. If you like your monster girls, and some light combat with the added hentai, go ahead and start building your harem today. The production values are decent and the unique aesthetics might appeal very well to you. Start playing Overlewd.
