STORY

We are dropped right in the middle of the plot, I think. For the first 25 minutes, I wasn’t even sure which character was which. It doesn’t help that the entire cast is revealed at once rather than organically one by one. Narumi and Akira are nurses in studying at a local college/university, but Akira is packing some heavy tsundere sauce. She has a social anxiety that frequently causes her to lash out at her fellow classmates, notably Ringo, Yuuno and Satuki.

Only Narumi seems to understand her and is determined to make her part of a cute yuri romance. The plot is of a slice of life rom-com between two girls as they study to become well respected nurses. This involves training on how to attend to patients, how to de-escalate issues, changing bedsheets, and more.

The story is padded with a considerable amount of what feels like hospital filler while we develop the unique relationship between Akira and Narumi. There is a real sense of character development, not just for Akira, but the supporting cast as well. Akira receives the bulk of the development, learning how to socialize with people and accept her feelings. I won’t deny that my heart did grow several sizes larger at various parts, filler and all.

GRAPHICS

A Kiss for the Petals has sprites for each of the five main characters, plus one or two side ones. While the sprites have similar builds and poses, their distinguishing features are in their hair and eyes. Some sprites have “same-face syndrome”. The sprites have multiple expressions and a handful of different poses. Narumi and Akira also have different outfits that they wear, including their standard uniform, some casual wear and their birthday suits, of course!

Thin lines give the CGs a clean and polished look. Light shadows are used to add depth to the characters and objects. The artstyle features vibrant colors for the characters, making them visually appealing and eye-catching. In contrast, the backgrounds have more reserved colors, allowing the characters to stand out. The CGs have variations and evolutions, mostly for expressions and bodily position changes.

CGs are filmed from typical angles, but nothing uniquely lewd or sexy. There are over 20 CG artwork pieces. Background artwork have no variations for day and night cycles and have detail, but not necessarily enough to pop against the sprites. Backgrounds includes various locations such as the hospital lecture hall, practice room, apartments for the girls, and a bathhouse among others.

MUSIC

With a soundtrack consisting of 12 songs, the game offers a wonderful collection of tracks to enjoy. The songs range from soft and intimate melodies to silly and comedic tunes, with a focus on capturing the essence of typical slice-of-life moments. The soundtrack offers a relaxing experience, with a combination of synthetic and original instruments such as the piano, drums, guitar, xylophone, triangle and flute which adds a rich musical texture to the game. The soundtrack has a heavy reliance on the piano, but uses it to create beautiful melodies throughout the story.

Most of the songs blend the original instruments with synthetic elements which ultimately results in a unique experience as you’re playing. There is a good variety of songs that cater to different genres, mostly offering upbeat tunes or songs reminiscent of those found in romantic comedy anime. The songs mimic the mood onscreen and manage to deliver the emotional punch of the scenes. As per the norm, music is looped but here it’s seamless and not noticeable at all.

GAMEPLAY

A Kiss for the Petals is a visual novel format, allowing players to experience the story through text and visuals. To progress through the story, you need to click the screen. The game provides enough save slots, allowing players to save their progress at various points. The game has multiple endings. Players must make decisions throughout the game that impact your relationship with Akira.

The game also features a CG Mode, where players can view unlocked CG artwork. A Scene Mode is available for players to replay their favorite scenes. The game also has a Music Library, where you can listen to the game’s soundtrack. The entire soundtrack is available to listen to from the start of the game. CGs and other extras are unlocked as you play through the game.

VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)

The game is fully voiced in Japanese. The actresses do an okay job with the material they are given. They embody the personalities of their characters, but Akira and Narumi sound very alike when there is no need for emotion or tone. During sex, the cutesy lewd noises they make cover up this similarity and is a genuine pleasure to listen to.

The sound effects library isn’t very big. There are noises for everyday sorts of things like running water, bells, alarms, a couple of abstract sounds but the most unusual thing I heard was a plate clanking against a cup. The sex sounds are also very bare, which is a little surprisingly. When we women masturbate, there is a lot of squelching involved.

HENTAI

The sex is tame with basic situations like fondling each other’s pussies, kissing deeply and romantically holding each other. There are more hard-core scenes once the relationship has advanced to where Narumi and Akira scissor one another, much to Akiza’s embarrassment. Speaking off, the dialogue and descriptions during all the sexual scenes highlight intimacy. It’s not about being sexy or lewd, but growing as a couple and learning to love. Sex scenes vary in length, depending on what’s needed, though I did notice sex scenes stretching ass the game progressed. In a later scene, the two girls are in a 69 position eating one another’s cunts out. One scene involves Akira taking the lead. Another involves some naughty play in the classroom.
