This immediately makes him more sympathetic than the average visual novel protagonist. His relationship with his stepsister Akiza follows the familiar sibling-rival formula, with constant arguments masking some odd repressed feelings for each other.
Akiza is presented as the social opposite of Izayoi. Athletic, outgoing, and popular among her classmates, she already has an established relationship with her boyfriend and enjoys a much wider social circle. Their contrasting personalities become essential once the body-swapping mechanic enters the plot.
Rounding out the cast is Matsuda, Izayoi’s childhood friend and resident comic relief. He’s unapologetically portrayed as the stereotypical anime pervert, providing much of the early humor while also acting as someone Izayoi can openly confide in. His parallel in Akiza’s case would be Akeno, her best friend. Akeno’s obsessed with Akiza in a pervy manner, too, and they even move in together at one point because of how close their friendship is.

Despite the explicit premise, the plot doesn’t deviate into the porn directly. Instead, it focuses on introducing its cast, explaining the rules of its world, and carefully establishing the mechanics behind the body-swapping. The pacing is deliberate, but never feels overly slow, as each scene contributes either to character development or to expanding the world’s strange social rules and general lore. The humor leans heavily into anime-style misunderstandings, exaggerated reactions, and awkward social situations, which will feel familiar to any of us.
One of writing’s greatest strengths is its pacing. It never feels dense or overly wordy, making it easy to breeze through in a few sittings (or even a single one if that’s your thing). At the same time, the narrative is far from simplistic, continuously introducing new ideas, character relationships, pieces of worldbuilding and maybe even some red herrings (we don’t know yet) that are sure to keep you invested.

Most of the sexual content serves to establish the central gimmick rather than functioning as standalone fanservice. The novel makes it clear that this supernatural condition will become the driving force behind both the comedy and the encounters both our main protagonists will have moving forward.
Of course, there’s no need to clarify that the novel’s main gimmick is the body-swapping. This means you will be reading both Izayoi’s and Akiza’s POV (despite them being switched in different bodies). That means you’ll be reading as both a man and a woman in the POV.
As expected, it caters to a variety of tastes without overwhelming the narrative. The primary attraction is the supernatural body-swapping between the protagonists, but readers will also encounter lighter themes such as teacher-student relationships, some BDSM toys, catgirl maid fanservice, and yuri-oriented teasing. Most of these elements are introduced as part of the cast’s personalities and relationships, suggesting they’ll play a larger role as the story develops and also making them feel pretty organic when woven into the main storyline.
Concluding thoughts
As an opening volume, My Life as an Ero-Magi Sucks! All Roads Lead to Perversion! succeeds at making you curious about what comes next. It introduces an unusual dystopian setting, establishes an entertaining cast of characters, and presents a body-swapping mechanic capable of generating both comedy and erotic scenarios without feeling repetitive. While many questions remain unanswered: including the origins of the Obscenity Institute, the reason society transformed fifteen years ago and just who are those two mysterious men we keep switching our perspective to, the novel wisely treats these mysteries as long-term hooks instead of rushing to provide immediate explanations. If volume 1 wasn’t already entertaining enough, its closing revelation elevates the story from a quirky body-swap comedy into something with much greater narrative potential, making it difficult not to want to jump right onto the next one.
Fans of ecchi comedies, supernatural body-swap stories, and lighthearted erotic novels will likely find plenty to enjoy in this opening volume, even if its primary focus is laying the groundwork for the increasingly absurd and horny situations that are clearly waiting around the corner.
