STORY
Here’s the order of the game. First you visit the “Grass Country”, then the “Dessert Country”, then the “Snow Country”, then you return to the “Grass Country” where the game ends. Altogether it’s an hour-long experience.
No information is given about Mareina or her family except that she has a sister named Marina, who joins her at sea. Marina doesn’t have much dialogue, since she’s an introvert compared to her extroverted big sis Mareina.
There are no side quests or plot twists. There is one mandatory sex scene where Mareina fucks a guy to bargain for information. The game ends when Mareina kills the pirate king who has been terrorizing innocents.
This game is funny because it’s self-aware of its casual nature. Like in the snow town Mareina says “Why is nobody walking around outside?”, which is a nod to the limited amount of NPCs in this game. And when you beat the final boss she says “I thought becoming Pirate King would be harder than that”, which references how easy this game is.
Prime Minister Sebas is the only NPC besides Mareina that gets any screen time. He constantly urges Mareina to come home and return to life as a princess. Of course, at the end of the game, he acknowledges her independence and resolves to wait for her to come home on her own. There aren’t really character arcs here, since the game is too short to develop them well.
GAMEPLAY
Pirate Princess Mareina was made in RPG Maker VX Ace. Press CTRL to skip text. Press W to hide text boxes. Text skip is only active if you press Z first.
This game does not have level-up mechanics or item shops. It’s a very linear experience, and you only gain levels when you beat bosses or find items. Grinding monsters has no purpose whatsoever, which felt like a waste.
Rather than a typical turn-based combat system, this game relies on reaction commands. A symbol will appear on screen. You must press X or Z as quickly as possible! If you press the wrong key or are too slow, you will take damage.
Spend gold to hire sailors, since your crew count declines as you travel. You also lose sailors when you touch an enemy ship. The ship battle happens automatically without player input. Since enemy ships earn you more money, it’s always smart to keep a high crew count.
Spend gold to hire prostitutes to lower the lust of your crew. For every step you travel, their lust will rise, so you should always sail with a destination in mind. At 50 lust, a sex scene occurs. At 100 lust, it’s game over and you lose command of your ship.
While the game has fundamental elements that would make for an engaging exploration title, it ends after only one hour. If the game was longer and had level-ups, this would easily be one of the best adult pirate games on the market.
GRAPHICS
There are only 8 CGs total, seven of which can only be obtained by defeat in battle or losing control of your ship. Thankfully there’s a gallery room in the postgame to enjoy all these scenes.
The in-game sprites are taller than the standard RPG Maker norm. There are very few NPCs to interact with. And although the movement speed at sea is fine, in town, it’s very slow.
There is no scene with a pure ass focus. There is no CG showing Mareina in her princess outfit. Although her home nation and army are described as powerful, we never actually get to see it. Even the statement that you’ve entered a new country feels hollow, because you only have access to one village per continent.
The visuals of the game shine best when you enter a dungeon. Rather than a third person perspective, this game functions as a first-person dungeon crawler similar to Elder Scrolls Daggerfall.
Even with this unique perspective, there were still missed opportunities. You can explore and fill up the minimap, but you can never actually view the map as a whole to see how big the dungeon is. And although the last dungeon has dark rooms, there are no torches or spells to help you in exploring.
VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)
Pirate Princess Mareina has no voice acting.
The sound effects are all stock assets from the RPG Maker engine. Due to the lack of spells or various weapons, the sound design is very limited. Even the final blow against the final boss was a basic digital chime.
MUSIC
There are 32 tracks in total, with an emphasis on harps, horns, and piano. The orchestral style shines best in the final dungeon with violin, drums, and choir chants coming together for a truly epic showdown. All tracks are licensed free assets from a popular Japanese musician. I honestly wish the game was longer than an hour purely for the sake of hearing this soundtrack while exploring the wide ocean blue.
HENTAI
There are 8 scenes total. A gallery room is in the postgame, where you can review any scenes you missed. Scenarios include blowjobs for your crewmates, tentacle sex, and riding the shy prince for information in the cowgirl position.
The best scene in the game is when Mareina fucks an orc. The dialoguge is really well written when she says “I’m not even your species! I’m a human!”. It’s too bad the scene ends with a game over since Mareina never escapes the orc.
There is no insertion sound effect, though there are plenty of thrusting noises. The CG variations don’t always trigger when they should. In particular, Mareina usually starts out reluctant and slowly begins to love the cock. But the CG might show her loving it from the start or staying uncertain even when dialogue shows she’s begging him for cum. It’s really weird when the visuals and text don’t match.
CONCLUDING WORDS
Pirate Princess Mareina is an underappreciated gem in the hentai games market. Play as a busty pirate girl and explore the world, what’s not to love?! If the game was longer, everyone would be praising it from the rooftops! In its current state however, it’s a standard hentai RPG, solid where it counts.
