Shoot up giant monster girls and unlock hentai CGs in this frenetic shoot em’ up game!

STORY

The story is barely there, it’s mostly window dressing to set up the goal of the game. Two fairy sisters, Kei and Sei, live peacefully in a forest. Sei is born with one wing and cannot fly well, and Kei cares deeply for her.

One day, Kei wakes up to find Sei is missing. She leaves their home to search for her. A mysterious mist suddenly rolls in, engulfing the forest. Kei is attacked by dangerous creatures and giant monster bosses. She kills them all in hopes of eventually reuniting with Sei.

It’s clear that the story is secondary to the gameplay. The core gameplay of shooting creatures and giant monsters is what the game concentrates on, and it’s good. Throughout the stages, you catch sight of Sei as she flies off to the next level, but there are no dialogue or conversations between the two characters.

GRAPHICS

Tenta Shooter art is Japanese anime style. The visuals are tasteful pixel art. Everything looks very fluid when animated. Enemies come to life and appear vivid and menacing as they spew bullets.

The background art for each stage is pleasing for the eyes. The variety is good, as each environment has a different atmosphere. The enemies that occupy each stage make sense. On the second stage for example, Kei battles over the surface of a watery pond. The enemies in that stage loosely resemble real insects. They make use of the environment, skipping across the water, swimming through it, leaving ripples after Kei puts them to sleep with the fishes. Nice attention to detail!

The colour palette is rather dull, but remains eye-catching. The game uses gaudy, neon colours for bullets, making them easier to dodge. The images that border the game screen are easy on the eyes.

SOUND EFFECTS AND VOICE ACTING (SFX)

There is no voice acting. There’s few sound effects outside of gameplay sequences. You hear the harsh buzz of your character spraying bullets, and the light dings of successfully activating the bullet counter. I didn’t notice anything special about the sound effects, but they contributed enough to make the game immersive.

MUSIC

I was surprised by how pleasant the music was. Upon starting the game, I wasn’t all too impressed by the main menu theme. However, the songs played during battle sequences were awesome. The second level’s track is a mix of synthetic sounds that give off an otherworldly vibe. Despite the mish mash of audio clips, the song never sounded messy. It successfully created a tense, mysterious atmosphere. The third level on the other hand was a rock song. It was considerably more intense, and fit the rising difficulty level.

There is a decent variety of tracks which keep the game from sounding repetitive. I didn’t get tired even while replaying old levels. The further you progress, the faster each song becomes.

GAMEPLAY

The game has keyboard and gamepad controls. I started off with the keyboard since it’s how most people would play it. I spent time figuring out the controls as the game didn’t provide instructions.

The ‘Z’ key functions as ‘Enter’ in the menus. Pressing ‘Z’ in combat makes your character shoot. ‘X’ is ‘back’ in the menus, in combat it counters enemy bullets. You move your character with the arrow keys. ‘Enter’ makes the game full-screen. There doesn’t appear to be an option to remap the keybinds.

I switched to a controller, and it was more enjoyable. Press ‘A’ to shoot and ‘B’ to counter. Movement can either be controlled by the left analog stick or the directional buttons.

Shoot Em’ Up games usually have their unique gimmicks that spice up the formula. Tenta Shooter has the two button control system, which I found simple but effective. Countering enemy bullets turns them into large dekopon oranges. It takes practice to properly execute counters.

If you waste your counter on the first wave of measly bullets, for example, you might miss the next wave that has double or triple the amount. Activating your counter prematurely can be devastating.

Killing tinier enemies nets you small dekopon oranges that build up your counter gauge bar, and also nullifies the damage you’ve already taken. The damage bar tracks these things.

There are three game modes for players to test their mettle. Shock Mode, Arcade Mode, and Score Attack. The difficulty can be adjusted in each mode. I found Shock Mode the hardest since dying a single time results in a game over. Arcade Mode leaves more room for error for players. You can revive a set number of times during one playthrough. Score Attack is self-explanatory; you choose a stage to try and beat your high score.

Tenta Shooter has a good amount of replayability if you want to try out different bullet styles. Each of the four types of bullets have their pros and cons.

HENTAI

The game offers hentai unlockables which come in the form of cards. They can be viewed in the gallery at your leisure. Cards will only unlock if certain conditions are met. The conditions for unlocking each card are not communicated to the player. The game gives you five cards at the beginning.

The art is mostly static, not animated. I liked Kei’s eyes in one of the images. She had a kinky shine in her eyes while completely tied up by a monstrous tentacle that molested her pussy. Most cards feature Kei being violated by tentacles, like a large blue tentacle thrusting into her sopping vagina while another tentacle massages her boobs. Some cards feature the giant monster girl bosses as well.

CONCLUSION

Tenta Shooter is a great bullet hell game to waste time with. It has plenty of hidden content to unlock. With a good number of hentai CGs to hunt for, you have a fun excuse to keep plowing through the challenging stages.

If you like the Touhou series, I recommend this game to you. Download Tenta Shooter at Nutaku’s digital store. You can help support our website by visiting our humble perverted webstore.
