You are an ancient, powerful demon summoned by the female mage apprentice, Sophia. A battle ensues as you fight to prevent yourself from becoming her familiar. It’s a gender war of microcosmic proportions!

STORY

Upon being summoned to the human realm, Xarric thinks he’s faced with yet another human unfit to use his power for her own ends. He mocks Sophia, to which she responds by proposing a duel. The duel ensues with Sophia putting up a strong fight against the boastful demon. Xarric continues to tease her as they fight.

The story boils down to a battle between the couple, culminating in a sex scene determined by the outcome of the battle. What’s interesting about this is that the ending changes based on who wins, and how.

The story is not extensive but the execution is spot on. Both characters are well written. The chemistry between the two is one of the best elements of the game. They are perfect foils for each other.

The dialogue is a good read. I particularly enjoyed the scene right before the fight. The chat between the characters is flirty, like a couple having their first argument right before hot and steamy makeup sex.

GAMEPLAY

Although Magebuster appears to be your typical visual novel, it’s also an RPG. You fight Sophia using elemental magic like fire, ice, and lighting. This makes Magebuster equally enthralling and frustrating. By implementing RPG gameplay, Magebuster adds depth and unpredictability to a story that would otherwise have been straightforward. As the ebb and flow of the battle affects the outcome of the game, every decision feels important.

Each turn, you choose which elemental spell to cast. You can also choose to heal yourself. After you’ve chosen the spell, it’s Sophia’s turn to retaliate. If you’ve played any turn-based RPGs, you’ll know how this works.

The combat is very exciting at the start of the fight. It’s new and fresh but becomes quite repetitive by the time you’re playing round four. And you still have additional rounds to beat if you wish to unlock new sex scenes.

Some gameplay elements make no sense in context of the story. Despite the narrative hyping up Xarric’s powers to be stronger than Sophia’s, Xarric’s attacks deal less damage. She has way more health as well which makes little sense given how the story was told.

An interesting mechanic is that the game lets you know your opponent’s next attack and when it is coming. Any potential advantage you gain from precognition is washed away by Sophia’s unexpectedly overwhelming power. Somehow, even though the game reports the characters’ attack powers as even, Sophia’s attacks do far more damage, sometimes twice as much.

GRAPHICS

The art style is a westernized take on the Japanese anime style.

Sophia’s design deserves special praise. The style and coloring of her attire are spot on. She’s a mage and everything in her clothing and body reinforces this perception. She’s clenching a spellbook in her hand, she wears a cloak around her youthful neck. Xarric meanwhile has a inhumanly colored skin, tattoos, a muscular form and nerdy glasses. He’s your typical humanoid demon with a massive dick for such a little pussy.

Sophia’s sprite changes facial expressions frequently. Her lips, eyes, and mouth change often to convey how she’s feeling in the moment. She’s very cute and very human, which makes the semi-erotic battle between the characters good foreplay preceding raw, unprotected intercourse.

The game takes place in a dungeon that’s dimly lit by candles. The vibe of the place is ominous and intimate. The coloring in this game is superb. The atmosphere is full of anxiety and doubt, as the characters occupy a dark environment colored in purple and other dark colors. While I argue it’s a strength, it must be noted that some backgrounds are extremely basic, sometimes just being a mash of colors or a faded image.

VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)

This game features full English voice acting.

Not only is the diction from the dialogue spot on, but also the enunciation from the actors themselves. This results in compelling and believable characters, as the tone of voice perfectly mirrors the on-screen action.

Sophia is compelling in her role and every word she speaks is bursting with her innocent and determined personality. Every emotion displayed on the screen is reflected by a change in both the pitch and tone of her voice. In the same way, Xarric’s guile and trickery are highlighted in the tone he speaks in.

MUSIC

The soundtrack has 14 all-original compositions. Each song sets the tone of different scenes nicely.

The opening number is called ‘Malicious Spirit’. It serves as a strong opening that immediately hits you upon reaching the start menu. The melody is captivating, with superb piano and guitar work that get your heart pumping. The dark undertones remind the player of dangers to come.

‘Ill Omen’ is a chaotic track. The keystrokes change pace fast, keeping the listener on his toes. With every note, danger feels closer than ever. Meanwhile, tracks like “Summoner’s Duel” and “Mage No Mercy” are electrifying. These songs have a high tempo mixed with well-executed strumming. It’s an energetic experience.

HENTAI

Sophia’s personality is based on how her fight with Xarric played out. She has incredible range. My favorite was when she turns into a maniacal, cock-hungry dom to a submissive Xarric. What personality she exhibits during sex is based on the ending, which are six in total.

Ending number six captured the bond that Xarric and Sophia developed throughout the fight. The scene started slowly, with Sophia acting timid and scared. She places her trust in Xarric, as he prepares to thrust into her to fix her magic circuit. He pampers and teases her until her juices are flowing and she’s ready to take him in. As he slides it in, the newfound sensation of dick drives her insane. They fuck passionately all night long in her room until she passes out from one too many explosive orgasms.

Other scenes are noteworthy as well, with Sophia adopting a domineering attitude. The voice acting during these scenes sells them immaculately, which makes up for the sometimes average art.

CONCLUDING WORDS

Magebuster: Amorous Augury is a compelling game with solid gameplay, great selection of music, and quite professional English voice acting. A variety of branching options ensures that the game has hours worth of replay value. The overall execution is a great showing from an aspiring western hentai studio.

I recommend this game to male and female players who like one-handed gameplay. Download Magebuster on Steam. Remember to also check out our webstore for tons of free and premium hentai games.
