Start your adventure as Riley the blue-haired sailor girl! But when Riley is captured halfway through the game, play as her friend Annie to explore the sea and rescue her!
STORY
There are 10 levels in total. At the end of level 5, Riley is kidnapped and you begin playing as Annie. Once all levels are completed, you can play as either girl on endless mode. There is no overarching story.
Usually the end of the level is marked by rescuing a girl. There’s Elva the darkskinned babe, Maxine the blonde, and so many more. None of them have much dialogue or personality, but they’re hot to look at!
Although the art may imply they’re pirates, the girls never kill or steal from the innocent. They fit more into the genre of treasure hunters who hope to find the treasure of the flying dutchman!
GAMEPLAY
Sea of Whores was made in the Unity game engine. There is no text log or ability to hide text boxes. Press W and S to move between lanes. Press E to shoot. Press D or A to use special skills. The control scheme allows one-handed play, but gamers with fat fingers may struggle.
There are three lanes that enemies walk on. Enemies appear on the right side of the screen and walk left towards you. Press E to shoot them. Kill all bad guys before they reach your side of the screen, or you’ll lose a heart. Lose three hearts and it’s game over.
Although this game visually appears like an action-strategy title, it actually relies heavily on grinding. Kill enemies to earn gold to level up your character. No matter how skilled you are, you have to level up or the enemies will simply overwhelm you.
You play five levels as Riley and five as Annie. Riley uses a pistol for quick and light firing. Annie uses a cannonball for slow but powerful strikes. Each girl levels up independently from the other.
The level-ups come in three forms. Attack power, skill power, and skill cooldown. Skills range from a rapid fire ability to an enemy slow down spell. They’re pretty simple and easy to use, so don’t worry about forgetting them.
While the game is enjoyable as it is, I would have really loved a customizable character. Especially with the simplified art style, creating a custom character should have been an easy addition. Leveling up my own pirate would have made this a seriously addictive experience.
GRAPHICS
The pixel art style is simple yet realistic enough to convey the action on screen. Whether it’s a cannon ball being shot or a pistol bullet flying through the air, the animations convey impact and action perfectly.
There are 20 scenes total. There are 10 base images. Each CG has two versions, clothed and nude. The standard playthrough unlocks 10 clothed scenes while the postgame endless mode unlocks the 10 nude versions.
The simple art style works well during gameplay due to the ease of movement, but the CGs look plain. There isn’t much shading or detail due to the limitations of the pixel art style. Even worse, the in-game sprites don’t resemble the pixel CGs very well. While the sprites look short and cute, the CGs have tall, slender, curvy women. Speaking of women, they all look pretty similar except for hair and eye color.
VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)
Sea of Whores has no voice acting.
The sound effects are standard and focus on your attacks and menu toggles. The enemies and ecchi scenes are silent. This felt like a massive waste. Especially when scenes focus on big booty! I would have loved to hear a spanking or something, but instead it’s all quiet images! What a shame!
MUSIC
The title screen and base menu share the same music. It’s a digitally synthesized background track without any real instruments. The battle music switches to a more orchestral format that sounds significantly more crisp and clear than the base menu. There are only a handful of tracks throughout the game, probably because the main focus is on the gameplay and action.
HENTAI
There are 10 base CG, each has two versions, nude and clothed. The recollection room counts that as 20 scenes total, but that can give the wrong impression to new players who may assume there are 20 unique CGs.
As an ecchi title, there are no penises or male crewmates. Every level, the player is rewarded with a sexy CG. Sometimes it’s plainly hot like girls in a bath, while other times you see a more story-focused image like Riley in chains.
There are no animations or dialogue when you unlock the CGs. Rather than being directly provacative, many scenes are simply the girls in their bras, living life on the ship. While the tits are nice, I wish the content was more daring.
CONCLUDING WORDS
Sea of Whores is a fun action game about pirate girls who explore the ocean. The pixel animated gameplay is nice, but I wish the CG images were animated too. And having only 10 CGs felt like too little to reward a player for sticking through the highs and lows of the adventures. While the title has some obvious weaknesses, it is an enjoyable adult game that I can heartily recommend.
