(PC & Mobile) Magical Schoolgirl RPG Review: I am Magicami DX

I am Magicami DX, a browser-based RPG with 3D hentai elements. Developed and published by Digital Entertainment Ltd. Play for free (PC). Play for free (mobile).  Full Japanese voice acting. Censored genitals.

“MGCM” as they call it, kicks off with a massive barrage of style, a very juicy sex scene, fully voice-acted schoolgirl-rich environment full of jiggly anime tiddies.

 

Naturally we are in the business of saving the world. After a few conversations with the starting girls their Iphone asks them if they believe in “Limitless possibilities”. To which they answer ‘yes’, and after being asked to kiss their Iphones, they get a magical girl transformation and receive Sailor Moon type outfits to start battling the demon girls of the world.

By this point it has been several minutes of dialogue, hip upbeat music, stylish visuals and all-round flashy production values and style commitments.  Obviously it’s aimed at the newer generations of gamers seemingly trying to go for teen vibes across the whole game.

There is a full narrative made for this one, not much sense to go into it for the review. It is a light-hearted affair loaded with schoolgirls and goofy conversations, very much akin to regular Anime. Magicami actually boasts its own intro sequence quite like an anime opening. The Japanese who made this are certainly going for a lifestyle environment, not merely a gacha game.

You get your own staging hub, which you can also customize over time.

Gameplay is a stylish 3D grid battle with characters with upgradeable stats and a variety of special abilities. It naturally has auto-play for all the hentai fans who could not be bothered to read all of the abilities or decide which of the demon girls on-screen to spank first.

Nutaku calls it “Deep Strategy”, but in reality, what they mean is it has more than two buttons and more than two things to do with them – unlike most other similar games.

Unfortunately there is no keyboard support, which is sad, because I want to unleash the first ability by pressing key 1.

The collection aspect comes with a twist.  There are 16 girls in total, and they come with huge amounts of outfits. Each of these outfits is considered an individual playable character complete with its own abilities.

Arguing for or against this is pointless, because some portion of hentai fans will always appreciate extra style options to their characters, as opposed to always being limited to a default look that you normally get in competitor games.

Somewhat of a customization problem is created. You are still prevented from playing a character you like visually and having your selection of outfits and combat skills. Unfortunately you can’t simply skin swap.

It’s even more odd that you can equip these separate Outfit/Characters and use them as stat boosts in combat. Giving you an endless inception of upgradable things. A bit too much for my taste.

I just can’t wait to see which game will be the first to allow infinite stacking of these bullshit upgrades that are both socketed and socket-able at the same time. It was bound to happen sooner or later, given how the industry is going, but it is always amusing to watch the escalation of unpopular design.

The thing about graphics is really about performance, you can judge how visually pleasing everything is on screenshots, but this extravagant 3D still has a demand on specs, so if you are not running a modern rig or your phone isn’t that loaded on power, you are going to struggle to run the game in all its glory.

Unlike many other games, this has a style target and everything about it is consistently leading to that. You have a goofy schoolgirl world, full of goofy schoolgirl things, mixed in with Demon girls.

Vibe-wise it’s richer than most. 65 music tracks, full and competent Japanese voice acting, plenty of sound effects. And more importantly, the ability to actually access all its media. Say you like a certain song. Pop the main menu, and play the exact one you want to listen to right now. All this excellence makes me sad when they didn’t put in a full-screen button.

I always deeply appreciate devs who try to make eye candy games and also are smart enough to allow us to hide the interface. The interface is very stylish, responsive and only stumbles with minor issues. Such as some of the ability icons being lazy copies of each other. There is also the unfortunate classic of having to select and confirm 1 out of 1 possible target for your attack. It’s like buying one soda can at the supermarket and then the cashier would not let you proceed with checkout before you answered her question “Would you pay with card?” when paying with card is the only thing allowed.

I start with 83000 party power from landing, so it’s one of those games that will litter the screen with absurd amounts of large numbers the more you get into it. I personally think that absurd numbers are hard to read, since when you go after hundreds of millions, there are too many zeroes on screen to keep up with the actual information the numbers are supposed to represent.

They allow you to play voice recordings of sex. Which is not a bad idea per se, but nobody really accounted for this game being played outside of Japan, so while the voicework is great, unfortunately they didn’t consider adding a subtitle box for those tracks, which is a significant, being one of the first lewd rewards you get for playing, not counting the landing sex sequence used for your introduction to the world. It’s 21 minutes of voice acting for just one recording, with all the juicy licking and sucking sounds you can get. I would rather someone bothered to translate the conversational part of it.

Hentai in my opinion is very high quality and quite juicy too, but I know mosaic censorship is a deal breaker for many of you, that’s why I’m ducking some points from it in the hentai category.

CONCLUDING WORDS

Overall it’s very goofy, high production values, short skirts, much female energy. There’s a bit more going on than in the average browser game, more mechanics to learn and enjoy, and a character-driven story with voice-acting that utilizes 3D animations. It’s a bit strange as a gacha game, when the number of characters is unusually low, though they do get tons of outfits. If anything, you should just start the game and get check out the the opening animated scene. Play for free (PC). Play for free (mobile).
