STORY
Your default name is Ralph, and you’ve decided to join the tournament in the city of Elmia! Fighters from all over the world are participating, and you’ll finally have a chance to prove your worth!
This game has 20 unique endings. Obviously there is no overall plot leading in 20 different directions. Most of the endings are focused on you losing in battle and becoming obsessed with the girl who defeated you. It gets pretty sad, but thankfully there are multiple happy endings like getting a girlfriend and traveling the world together.
The writer seemed to try his best at the start and end of the story, with no sense of what to do in between. While the game begins with a journey to the big city and ends with the drama of taking your prize at the tournament, the middle portion is just random side quests. The amount of level grinding and backtracking is too damn high!
Go to the snow village for milk, go to the ocean for fish, go to the forest to find mushrooms, it’s all so boring! And with NPC dialogue rarely changing, I felt like I was in purgatory waiting for the story to continue again. Good pacing is key to an enjoyable experience, but this game has all its best content at the beginning and the end.
The one redeeming aspect of this game is its emphasis on choices. The player chooses when to fight in the tournament, they choose how hard to train, and they can even choose to join the adventurer’s guild, or not! The writing makes it clear that your successes and failures are entirely of your own making. And if you get defeated in battle, its because you’re a lazy sack of shit and deserved it.
GAMEPLAY
Gladiators of Elmia was created with RPG Maker. You move with the arrow keys and press enter to interact with the world around you. Hold CTRL to skip dialogue. Hold Enter to speed up battles. Press Shift to hide the text boxes.
The game cycle is painfully generic. Fight monsters until you have enough experience points and items to grow stronger. That way you can fight more monsters and prepare for the next boss battle. Repeat this for six hours or so and the game is complete.
Strangely, the character is able to use magic but it consumes Tech Points (TP). Tech Points can only be gained by taking damage, which means that you can’t actually raise your max magic, or rely on it in any meaningful way.
Instead of magic, the blue bar beneath your health is your “spirit”. Your max spirit cannot be raised and it’s constantly going down for every little thing. A girl could simply glance in your direction, and your mental fortitude will decrease. While this appears to be a challenge, in practice it encourages players to max out damage output and avoid lengthy battles. This makes most encounters repetitive.
A lot of design choices in this game are strange. Your character can be immobilized by paralysis, freeze, or infatuation. All these random status ailments make the battles annoying. And while there are good design choices, like a fortune teller to guide you forward, they’re bogged down by the sluggish gameplay.
GRAPHICS
The art is standard Japanese anime style.
The artist demonstrates a lot of versatility in exploring the humiliation content of the game. While the vast majority of scenes focus on a girl looking down on you or stepping on you, the art never appears wicked or scary. And in scenes where loving sex does take place, it feels natural and what you would expect from any other hentai game.
Sex scenes do not use variation images. You got a standard image and a cumshot. A character will sit still, unblinking and non-moving for a long time. Something like closing their eyes during sex would be easy to add, and would give this game more life.
A key selling point of the game is playing as a man who is always sexually harassed in battle. The girls often have provocative clothing that makes you wish for more. A girl in thigh-high socks and a sweater is super sexy, and it’s even more so when she straddles your body. My only complaint is that characters rarely appear nude.
All game sprites and textures are stock assets from the RPG Maker library. Even the main protagonist is a stock asset! You will get tired of these visuals. Especially with the constant backtracking, this game needed more variety.
The one redeeming aspect of the game is its level design. With icon encounters instead of random battles, players are encouraged to explore the dungeon and side-step conflict to conserve energy. Pick your battles! Some enemies go down easier than others. If two paths lead to the same destination, you should pick one depending on the enemy type and your likelihood of avoiding unnecessary battles.
VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)
Gladiators of Elmia has no voice acting.
The sound effects are all stock assets. Although the title refers to “gladiators”, everyone is a swordsman! No crossbows, no spears, no war hammers, just one-handed swords! There’s only so many times you can hear the generic sword slash before you get tired of it. The least they could’ve done is change the pitch of the sound depending on sword weight!
MUSIC
There are 50 songs on the soundtrack and they are fantastic! A wide variety of instruments are used with a heavy emphasis on bass guitar and hardcore drum lines! Some tracks sound like Super Nintendo games while others sound like Metallica concerts!
While the hard rock and 80s synth pop beats were fantastic, I was surprised to learn that these were all stock and licensed tracks! I was also surprised to learn that outside of big story moments, the game cycles a handful of forgettable tracks! Such a wasted opportunity! These two factors stop this game from receiving a perfect score in the music department.
HENTAI
There are 58 scenes in total. 32 of the scenes feature unique CGs while 26 do not. For example, an image of you being smothered in boobs repeats at least three times.
As a humiliation themed porn game, the vast majority of scenes involve handjobs or some other type of rubbing. For example, Sherry the warrior gives you a thighjob in front of an audience to see who cums first. These girls don’t want your pathetic cocks inside of them, they only play around with your dick to humiliate you!
The handful of standard sex scenes feature premature ejaculation, which I found disappointing. I finally got a big titty warrior girlfriend, and I can’t even fuck her properly! At least add some netorare so I can watch her moan on dick! This focus on humiliation makes the man into the focus over the woman, which is good for immersion but disappointing for waifu lovers.
The wide variety of women means that many get no scenes whatsoever. I would have loved to fuck a goblin girl, or get kinky with the squid babe, but alas they had no scenes! And when girls do have scenes, it’s often only one or two! Don’t get attached to any of these busty babes, because they rarely get the scenes they deserve.
If you can look past these flaws, the sex scenes in this game are undeniably hot. You got big titty MILFs, petite babes, and everything in between! Whether you want to be stepped on or want to peek at panties, this game has a ton of enticing scenarios.
CONCLUDING WORDS
Gladiators of Elmia is a fantastic humiliation hentai RPG. You play as a guy who faces constant sexual harassment. Writing for a male protagonist tends to be more difficult, but this developer did a great job of setting up the world and letting the player go wild in it. The assets from music to art are fantastic, and the overall experience is a joy to plow through.
