STORY

The pacing of this game is horrible. While it starts out interesting, the midgame around Day 12-40 has absolutely nothing happen whatsoever. The game takes place over an 80-day period, and it truly feels like the developer was stretching content as far as possible. The game could have been shortened to a 30-day period and it would have been significantly better.

To live in the big city as a foreigner you need a permit. You will only last until Day 10, so your central focus is extending your permit and gaining access to the deep interior of the city where the Key of Egg is being sold. But rather than leave this open-ended like an RPG should be, the game is written like a visual novel that holds your hand through every single event with scripted scenarios related to extending your permit. So rather than finding out how to do so on your own, everything is spoon-fed to you.

Serafina’s clan has the power to extract energy from the body fluids of another but only if it’s given willingly. For example, if someone willingly gave you their blood, you could heal yourself in an instant. Of course, going around asking for blood would identify you as a clan member, and the clan is hated for its magic.

Serafina focuses on another bodily fluid, semen! Whether it’s an event or battle, when someone cums onto or inside of Serafina, she will gain skill points. You also get skill points from leveling up. These points are spent on stat buffs.

This semen absorption power is not simply a hentai setup or game mechanic, it’s actually central to the story. Anju is having her pussy pumped full of monster fluids. Blood, sweat, cum, all of it. She is mutilating monster, crushing them into a paste, and then funneling them into herself. She’s abusing the power of the clan! All to get strong enough to wield the Key of Egg.

Anju hopes to use the power of the egg so the clan will no longer have to live in hiding. Absorbing power from blood makes the clan appear demonic, so it’s only natural they’re persecuted. Anju is not really a pure antagonist, since she’s enduring much for the sake of ending the discrimination.

However, Serafina is a pretty boring character. It would be difficult to name any distinct personality traits beyond wanderlust. A weak protagonist really kills the player’s attachment to the story. And the hour in between every plot point makes this a real chore to endure.

GAMEPLAY

Key of Egg was created in RPG Maker MV. Press W to skip text. Right click to hide text boxes. Use the mouse scroll for the text log.

Due to the 80-day countdown, players are discouraged from goofing off or exploring at their leisure. You should basically come into the game planning to be pure or whorish because there is no time to goof off.

Rather than a free-roaming open-world adventure game, Key of Egg focuses on a completely randomized and auto-generated event system. Select “forward” to advance. This consumes HP and Stamina. Every time you go forward you’ll either find an enemy, an item, or a stat-changing event. For example, a poisonous flower. If you’ve played Faylinn Quest or Almeria Knights, you already know how it works.

Any and every action you take will consume a day. Whether you have sex or do a single arena fight, a full day will pass. This is to create tension, so you’re concerned about making money and progress before the auction on day 80.

While a game like Anera Demon Tower does this well via numerous sub-events, this game does not. It feels so linear it may as well be a visual novel. You either prioritize level-ups, or whoring yourself. This involves raising lewdness and charm. Since these two methods of progression are completely separate and you’re on a timer, you’re basically forced to choose one way or the other.

There is a quest log but no side quests. There is no cooldown timer to being grabbed during battle, so you may lose your turn three times in a row due to poor design. Being groped raises your chance of orgasm and this carries over between battles. This means, you might orgasm at the start of a battle since arousal never cools down. And an orgasm means you’re effectively dead, which is incredibly infuriating.

Just as explorations are 100% RNG, so too are battles. More than once I got one-shot by an enemy I’d beaten thousands of times before. Usually because agility means nothing and enemies occasionally blitz you even when you’re high level.

Outside of combat, the core game design is weak as well. Going out exploring the world will earn you less money and experience than simply fighting the same arena contestant 20 times. And the arena isn’t even fun because of how stupid the battles are. Like the mage, you have to guard his attacks 10 times in a row in order to defeat him. That’s not creative battling, that’s just repetitive! Also, I recommend saving your skill points since it’s impossible to get them back once spent.

There are four difficulty modes which affect the amount of EXP and GP dropped by enemies. This will have little effect on your enjoyment though, because the core gameplay loop remains so repetitive.

GRAPHICS

There are no character sprites or free-roam mechanics, the entire game is played via menus. Feel free to use your mouse or the standard arrow keys to navigate menus. Only one standing artwork is ever displayed at a time, and varied expressions are minimal. Some CGs like the leg spread image are reused upwards of five times.

There are 52 scenes total, all accessible from the main menu. However, many of them are simply harassment like an ass groping. If you only count scenes with actual sexual content, there are only 30.

To simulate movement, variation images are swapped between during scenes. Like the POV cowgirl scene where one CG has Serafina hovering over a dick, and the next CG has her sitting directly down onto it. Even though the game is not animated, these vivid depictions create a sense of movement and impact regardless.

Due to the lack of character sprites and free-roam mechanics, the sex scenes and background images are the only aspects of the game with any individuality. I love how the church is a near photo-realistic depiction of a Catholic cathedral. And how the city streets and alleys are all super detailed and beautiful to look at. However, the player never has a sense of scale regarding the city. How big is it? What’s the population? A 3D environment gives enough open space for the player to imagine an answer, but simple background images do not. As beautiful as they are, they feel more like paintings than a cohesive civilization.

The game would have greatly benefited from an x-ray view during certain vaginal sex scenes. Serafina’s tits are so big that, depending on the camera angle, you cannot see her lower body. Thus, she’s having sex but the player cannot see the insertion. This is a pet peeve of mine, though the scenes are still enjoyable.

VOICE ACTING AND SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)

Key of Egg has no voice acting.

The sound effects in this game are primarily stock assets. Magic is super powerful in this game, so expect to hear that stock flame track every few seconds. The setting and dialogue indicate that magic is an uncommon skill in this world, which explains why the protagonist has such limited number of spells. While this matches the setting, it isn’t enjoyable. Paired with the repetitive nature of day to day gameplay, the sound effects get tedious fast.

MUSIC

The soundtrack has 49 songs total. The title has a musicbox track that sounds beautiful with every chime, though it doesn’t really mesh with the repetitive gameplay.

The theme for the slums is a super repetitive background beat you’d expect from some amateur who barely learned to mix beats on Ableton. The city music is a simple guitar track that evolves into a light melody, which is strange since the government literally deports people regularly. It honestly feels like the musician had zero contact with the writer. The music on its own is okay, but it doesn’t really match the writing, nor is it very memorable overall.

HENTAI

Key of Egg features 30 full scenes and around 20 miscellaneous ecchi moments. The vast majority of the game is coerced sex. Although the game is advertised as having impregnation content, this is purely for tentacles, slimes, and the occasional goblin. Players can give birth or get their womb cleansed for 100 gold.

The sex stats in this game are odd. They track pregnancies and births, but they don’t track penetration specifically. Rather, the sex stats record the amount of times a body part has been touched. So if someone ever touches your boob, it’s recorded as breast experience. This felt excessive and unneccesary. I’d much rather the game record facials and creampies and other meaningful contact.

Players determine whether or not Serafina is a virgin and how corrupted she becomes. Playing pure is very boring, and it’s clear the developer intends for you to prostitute yourself.

Sex is usually missionary and cowgirl. Erotic dialogue is generally very limited and usually focuses on explaining what’s happening. You will read lines such as “she opens her legs”, rather than meaningful dialogue to enhance the scenes.

Most sex scenes felt like a step along the road, rather than the culmination of tangible buildup. Like, you literally get drunk and wake up with a dick inside you. Rather than establish arousal that leads into sex, the scenes in this game usually felt like things that just happened. Especially because of the numerous defeat-sex scenarios.

CONCLUDING WORDS

Key of Egg is a game with an 80-day countdown and complete lack of tangible free-roaming mechanics. My biggest complaint is that the impregnation content is so heavily limited. It feels like a visual novel pretending to be an RPG. And the excessive randomization of events and battles makes it a painfully inconsistent experience.
